It’s that day again – it’s Sunday where majority of us gather in unison in our various churches to worship God. Most of the messages we receive on Sundays are encapsulated in one word, LOYALTY. We are taught to be loyal to God, our country, our leaders and our work.
Ghanaian music sensation, Becca grabbed the headlines this past week for deleting photos tying her to Nana Appiah Mensah’s beleaguered gold dealership firm, Menzgold and Zylofon Media. This act led to questions about her LOYALTY. To some, Menzgold and Zylofon Media are in trying times and it is in times like this that their major signees are expected to stay loyal to the brand. Others even branded Becca a HYPOCRTITE. Interesting, isn’t it?
In recent weeks, the evidence coughed up, alluding that Menzgold’s operations makes it a Ponzi scheme, is enormous. I should rightfully assume that Becca and the other signed artistes embraced the Menzgold brand because they thought that it was a legitimate business. If this assumption is right, then why criticize Becca for severing ties with a company which has been found to be complicit in its dealings with the public?
However, if Becca knew about the “ins and outs” of Menzgold’s operations then we can rightfully accuse her of being hypocritical or disloyal for taking down those pictures.
Then there’s talk about Becca returning all the “goodies” given her by NAM 1. Hmmm….. then all the media houses that advertised Menzgold are also required to refund Menzgold’s money. Yeah, in a way we can fault the artistes and media houses for not delving deeper into the affairs of Menzgold prior to accepting offers from them. However, the onus didn’t lie on neither the media nor the celebrities to do that since Menzgold wouldn’t have existed in the first place, if the regulatory bodies did their work well. At least, we assume that some lessons have been learnt and that next time, celebrities and the media will take a closer look at the operations of companies prior to accepting offers from them.
The final verdict is that loyalty doesn’t mean staying true to “a course” even upon realization that “the course” isn’t right and will end in misery. That’s mental slavery! This distorted view of loyalty is one of the reasons why Ghana hasn’t developed as much. We prefer to stay “LOYAL” to political parties to the detriment of the nation.
Becca ought to be applauded for her bravery but if at the end, NAM 1 is exonerated from the overwhelming allegations against him, then Becca has also made her point – She isn’t a toady!
