When Bongani Zungu’s looping header found the back of the net in the 71st minute, there was uncertainty. VAR had to be called upon and rightly, the goal stood. Samuel Chukwueze’s first half strike was cancelled and South Africa felt that the pendulum had swung in their favor. Little did Stuart Baxter’s men know that disappointment was rather to be served on their table.

Moses Simon’s 89th minute corner kick flew past an overstretched Ronwen Williams and landed on the feet of William Troost-Ekong who gladly tapped the ball into an open net. Below are 5 interesting facts from the game:

Samuel Chukwueze, Immense.
Samuel had a very great game. The South African defense found it extremely difficult coping with his trickery and pace. His efforts were duly rewarded as he scored the opener. He was also named man of the match.

Chukwueze Becomes Youngest Scorer Born on 22nd May 1999, Chukwueze becomes the youngest goal scorer at the ongoing AFCON at the age of 20 after his 27th minute strike.

Gernot Rohr Has The Last Laugh
In two previous games, Rohr was unable to secure a win over Baxter’s South Africa, losing 1 and drawing the other. Rohr finally earns a victory. Surely, he who laughs last, laughs best!

It Was A Great Game
This game provided a lot of excitement. In the first half, South Africa was primarily defensive and sought to hit Nigeria on the break but Nigeria prepared vividly and were very quick in transitioning from attack to defense. In the second half, South Africa pressed high and played a more attacking game. Nigeria’s strategy of using the width of the pitch worked to perfection and going forward, the Nigerians must be more clinical.

The Future Is Bright For Bafana Bafana
I am sure no one gave South Africa a chance of reaching the quarter finals prior to the beginning of the AFCON. They have proved a lot of doubters wrong and in effect, have a firm foundation to build upon. The future really holds exciting prospects for South African football.
