The struggle against sagging skin and wrinkles is a very real one. They may not be life threatening, but they can certainly be embarrassing and annoying enough to have a negative impact on your daily quality of life. That’s why the cosmetics industry is so large. Everyone wants to correct their skin problems as quickly and permanently as possible. Understanding how different skin tightening methods work is the key to selecting the one that will help you most.

Skin Damage is Somewhat Natural with Age and Time
First, it’s key that you understand that some skin damage is natural and happens to everyone. The simple reason for that is that your body makes a lot of hormones and healthy proteins when you are younger, but it naturally starts making less of those later on in life. Since those healthy substances contribute a lot to skin health, drops in the levels of them can make your skin lose its tight, healthy appearance over time.

Another reason skin damage occurs more as you age is that your skin has had more time to be affected by outside elements when you’re older. Anything from the weather and the sun to the application of chemicals on your skin can do a little bit of damage. Eventually that damage adds up to visible skin problems.

Common Skin Tightening Procedures That Correct Damage
Laser treatment is one of the most common ways to correct skin problems. People have used lasers to reverse damage caused by natural aging as well as outside elements for years. Depending on the type of laser used, they can either zap away blemishes on the surface or get down deep into the lower layers of skin, triggering natural repair processes within the body. You see, if your body feels like its cells are being attacked, production of materials needed to repair those cells will suddenly go up again.

Of course, encouraging natural increases in those substances isn’t the only way to reverse signs of aging. You could also choose to add in other substances. For instance, you could get injections of Botox to make the skin on your face look more round and supple. You also have the option of just treating the damage that you can see on the surface with things like microdermabrasion or chemical peels. Removing the loose top layer of skin can often reveal tighter skin cells underneath.

Treatments Should be Tailored to Your Skin Type
Just remember that choosing a skin tightening method is not as simple as just drawing a name out of a box. You can’t randomly select one. The treatment you choose has to be tailored to your skin concerns and skin type. Is your skin oily or dry? Is it light colored or dark colored? Yes, you’re trying to tighten it, but do you also have other skin issues you want to treat, such as acne scarring? Those are all important questions to ask yourself and important topics to bring up with your clinician or dermatologist before you have any procedure performed on your skin.
