T.J. Hockenson is an American football tight end for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Lions in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played college football at Iowa.
Hockenson was born on July 3, 1997 in Chariton, Iowa. He attended Chariton High School, where he was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and track. He was a two-time all-state selection in football and was named the Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year in 2015.
Hockenson played college football at Iowa, where he was a two-time All-Big Ten selection. He was also a finalist for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end. He finished his college career with 73 receptions for 1,080 yards and nine touchdowns.
Hockenson was selected by the Detroit Lions with the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was the first tight end taken in the draft and the highest-drafted tight end in Lions history. He signed a four-year, $19.8 million contract with the team.
In his rookie season, Hockenson started all 16 games and finished with 32 receptions for 367 yards and two touchdowns. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team and was selected to the Pro Bowl.
