The Macallan, in celebration of its 200th anniversary, unveiled its second edition of The Tales of The Macallan for the first time in Africa at an exclusive two-day event held on September 26 and 27, 2024 at Harbour Point, Lagos, Nigeria.
Tales of The Macallan Volume II, the second edition of a remarkable series of rare single-malt Scotch whiskies, is a distinguished single malt distilled in 1949 and bottled in 2022, marking a 73-year maturation milestone in the exceptional oak cask.
The 2-day event was a blend of art, storytelling, creativity, brand immersion and orchestral performances. The event drew in over 40 high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) from West Africa’s business and media sector. These distinguished attendees were treated to an exclusive exploration of The Macallan’s inspiration, its exquisite range of whiskies, and their profound historical legacy.
Crafted by The Macallan Lead Whisky Maker, Euan Kennedy, the Tales of The Macallan tells the story of Alexander Reid, The Macallan pioneer, highlighting the whisky-making legacies, and the heritage that has been passed down for generations. The whisky is a beautiful work of art presented within an extraordinary almanac and encased in a handcrafted Lalique crystal decanter. Each chapter of this artistic masterpiece tells the tale of Alexander Reid, the founder of The Macallan whose journey chronicled from a farmer to a teacher and a distiller.
The craftsmanship of this decanter goes beyond its intricate illustration. It is housed within an 800-page book and features enchanting illustrations by renowned British illustrator Andrew Davidson. The Tales of The Macallan Volume II reflects the original meaning of Alexander Reid’s surname in Scots – The Red One – with beautiful tones of bronzed oak and subtle red hues, achieved through patient maturation. The single-malt Scotch whisky offers rich aromas of forest fruits, sweet woodsmoke, antique oak, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla pods, subtle herbal notes, and treacle toffee. On the palate, it delivers flavours of black cherries, plum jam, dark chocolate orange, almond and custard pastry, ginger sponge with hints of cloves, sweet woodsmoke, and a touch of loose tea leaves. The finish is long and complex, assuring a lingering sweetness and smokiness.
The Macallan is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year with a series of carefully selected activities around the world. The launch of Tales of The Macallan Volume II in Lagos, Nigeria, highlights The Macallan’s dedication to enhancing consumer experiences in the African market demonstrating the significance of Nigerian whisky connoisseurs to The Macallan.
The Macallan has also implemented various initiatives to reduce packaging waste, support net-zero goals, and promote responsible sourcing practices while working towards achieving net zero emissions across all global operations by 2045 with a near-term target to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030.
