Former Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Liverpool striker, Fernando Torres has announced his retirement from football at the age of 35.

The forward who has been playing his club football for Japanese club Sagan Tosu, posted the news to his 3.66 million followers on Twitter.

Torres rose through the ranks at Atletico Madrid where he was famously called “El Nino” which means the kid, apparently due to his boyish looks. He made his debut for Atletico at the age of 17 and became the captain at age 19!

Torres made a huge name for himself when he moved to Liverpool in 2007. Under the tutelage of Rafael Benitez, he scored 81 goals in 142 games for the Reds. He won EURO 2008 and the 2010 World Cup with Spain.

He joined Chelsea for £50million in 2011 but he was never able to replicate his form at Liverpool. However, he was part of the Blues’ side which won the FA Cup and Champions League in 2012 as well as the Europa League in 2013.

After a brief spell at AC Milan, he rejoined Atletico before moving to Japan to see out his playing career.
