The nominees list for the 62nd GRAMMY Awards was revealed earlier and unfortunately there seems to be divided opinions as to whether Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has earned himself a nomination or not.
The answer is a big NO!
Beyonce’s album ‘The Lion King: The Gift’ was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album and some argue that Shatta Wale also becomes a nominee by virtue of co-writing a song on the album.
Well that argument will hold if Shatta Wale performed at least 51% of playing time on the album before he could be considered a nominee.
According to the category description guide for the 52nd Grammy Awards, the award is presented to artists that perform albums containing at least 51% playing time of newly recorded pop vocal tracks.
As it stands, Beyonce is the only person who performed at least 51% playing time — any featured artiste with less than that will not be considered a nominee — and therefore she remains the only nominee in that category.
Even if Beyonce’s album was nominated in another category, let’s say Album Of The Year, Shatta Wale as a featured artiste again needed at least 31% playing time to be considered a nominee.
So there you have it, Shatta Wale is not a Grammy Award nominee — at least not at the moment.
