Victor Miguel de Freitas Gomes, the South African referee who officiated in Ghana’s penalty loss to Tunisia faced the wrath of Ghanaians on social media.
A lot of Ghanaians felt that he denied The Stars qualification to the quarter-final after he disallowed Andre Ayew’s cheeky back heel finish in the first half for a hand ball against Thomas Partey.
“Unfortunately” for our passionate Ghanaians, replays show that Victor Gomes made the right call, though for another reason – Thomas Partey was offside.
A little background check on Victor Gomes reveals that he has been a referee in the South African Premier League (PSL) since 2008 and was voted PSL Referee of the season in 2012-13 and has been an international referee since 2011. In 2018, he was widely commended by the PSL after he rejected a bribe of over R300, 000. Gomes was offered the sum of money to fix a CAF Confederation Cup match between Nigerian side, Plateau United and Algerian side USM Alger.
