Sarkodie: The King of Ghanaian Hip-Hop
Michael Owusu Addo, better known by his stage name Sarkodie, is a Ghanaian hip-hop recording artist and entrepreneur from Tema. He is the CEO of SarkCess Music, his own record label. He is considered one of the major proponents of the Azonto genre and dance.
Early Life
Sarkodie was born on July 10, 1985 in Tema, Ghana. He attended Tema Methodist Day Senior High School and proceeded to IPMC where he studied Graphic Design. He began rapping at a very young age and participated in rap battles in his neighborhood.
Career
Sarkodie released his debut album Makye in 2009. The album earned him three nominations at the 2010 Ghana Music Awards. He won the Best Hip-Hop Song of the Year award for his single “Baby”.
In 2011, Sarkodie released his second album Rapperholic. The album was a huge success and earned him several awards, including Artist of the Year at the 2012 Ghana Music Awards.
In 2013, Sarkodie released his third album, Sarkology. The album was a commercial success and earned him several awards, including Album of the Year at the 2014 Ghana Music Awards.
In 2015, Sarkodie released his fourth album, Mary. The album was a commercial success and earned him several awards, including Album of the Year at the 2016 Ghana Music Awards.
In 2017, Sarkodie released his fifth album, Highest. The album was a commercial success and earned him several awards, including Album of the Year at the 2018 Ghana Music Awards.
Achievements
Sarkodie has won numerous awards, including Best International Act: Africa at the 2012 BET Awards, Best African Act at the 2014 MOBO Awards, and Best International Flow at the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards. He has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards.
Personal Life
Sarkodie is married to Tracy Sarkcess and they have a daughter, Titi. He is an avid supporter of the Black Stars, the Ghanaian national football team.
