After releasing the nominees for the 2016 Vodafone Ghana music awards, most music lovers and the followers of the award scheme were confused seeing the producer of one of the most popular songs ‘Yewo Krom’ Dr. Ray at the producer of the year category, knowing that the instrumentation was sampled from Gasmilla’s song Telemo produced by Standec.
In an exclusive interview with Flex newspaper concerning how everything started in terms of production, this was what he said:
“When Atom came to the studio to record the song, I asked him to sing the chorus and after singing I realize it went like Telemo. So I decided to play around the Telemo beat and I sampled it. I added some few things to it as a professional sound engineer to bring out something poles apart for it not to sound like duplication of Telemo. I always get surprise when people say it’s the same.”
He said he deserved the nomination and Ghanaians shouldn’t be astonished if he wins that category because the song was all over and it is part of the most popular song of the year as well.
“When you listen to the two instrumentations with technical ears, you could feel the differences. I know this explanation should have come long time but I didn’t want to talk about it initially. However, due to the nomination and how people are looking down on the production, I deem it necessary to explain myself,” he told Flex newspaper.
I personally think a lot of people are jealous about the song Yewo Krom being a hit song to this extent. Ghanaians shouldn’t forget this is not the only hit song I have produced because I have countless number of them” he added.
Knowing that in that same category are: Mo beat-Skolom, Beatz Dakay-Go higher, Bisa K Dei/Kaywa-Mansa, Kwadwo Akwaboah-Aposor, Kin Dee-Susuka,Chapter Beatz- Ekikime and EL-Minaa bo po, Dr. Ray still has his hopes high that he will win this category.
