Ladies In Media Launch Campaign Against Revenge Porn: Advocates For Criminalization Of Revenge Porn

An organization known as Ladies in Media have successfully launched a campaign against revenge pornography.

Revenge porn or revenge pornography is the distribution of sexually explicit images or video of individuals without their permission. And this trend has been on the rise, not only in Ghana but worldwide.

In a release signed by the National President of Ladies in Media, Margaret Barden, the mission and goals of the organization were laid bare.

Among other things, the Ladies in Media intend to initiate processes which will ultimately see to the criminalization of Revenge Pornography and it’s related acts as well as ensuring that victims are given the psychological care they ought to receive.

WHAT IS LADIES IN MEDIA? Ladies in Media was initiated with the objective of offering mentorship to young ladies within the Ghanaian journalism and media space. With participating members from Accra Film School, Ghana Institute of Journalism (G.I.J), Multimedia Institute of Ghana(M.I.G), GH Media School amongst others, our organization also serves as a networking platform where members are presented with business opportunities; in line with our vision of raising resourceful women in Ghanaian media to influence the global media landscape with excellence.

TREND OF REVENGE PORNOGRAPHY IN GHANA The alarming trend of revenge porn in Ghana, where videos and images of girls/women being sexualized are put in circulation on social media has gained our attention.

RESPONSIBILITY OF LADIES IN MEDIA With little being done to support the victims, apprehend the culprits, and generally curb the menace, Ladies in Media are minded by our responsibility to women to end this image-based sexual abuse.

The truth is that many victims do not survive the psychological trauma revenge pornography brings upon them. Hence our conviction to do more to sensitize, educate and protect the young Ghanaian woman through conference in the various schools with the theme: DIGITAL VIOLENCE AWARENESS CONFERENCE

WHAT LADIES IN MEDIA SEEK TO ACCOMPLISH
Our goal is for Ghana to initiate legislation to criminalize the act, give anonymity and mandatory counselling to victims and by extension apprehend the perpetrators involved with its circulation.

FINALIZATION OF CAMPAIGN
Our campaign will be finalized in October with a grand conference and an awareness walk in solidarity with victims of revenge pornography.
