Olympique Lyonnais forward, Memphis Depay has lifted the lid on the relationship with his father. Years ago, Memphis claimed that he had a strained relationship with his father, Dennis Depay. In an interview, Memphis revealed that he didn’t sport his surname on his jersey because his father abandoned him when he was just four years old and he didn’t want to wear the same name as the man who “hurt him so much”.
However, Dennis Depay refuted those claims by his son. According to Dennis, he continued to spend time with Memphis even after his marriage to Memphis’ mother broke down. “Saying that I didn’t see him after he was four is a lie,” Dennis told the Scottish Sun.
Dennis insisted that he didn’t abandon his son and further revealed that he bought Memphis’ first football for him. Dennis said of his son, “I would love to be back in touch with him. I miss him so much”.
To that effect, Memphis has revealed that he settled things with his dad a couple of years ago.
Meanwhile, Memphis has also added his voice to the fight against racism, where he wrote that there’s the need to “find love and strength in each other”.
