Valentines day otherwise known as Saint Valentines day was known to be a day dedicated to love, and people observed it by writing love letters and sending small gifts to their beloved. Over the years Valentines day have been defined with another concept by the Ghanaian youth.
For a typical Ghanaian youth — the day is an opportunity for all sorts of immorality. The days of small gifts and lovely gift cards is no more.
Of course some guys may spoil their girlfriends with gifts and chocolates but in reality they are looking forward to a wonderful night of pure romance.
After all, there is nothing like a free lunch. As a single guy whose longest relationship lasted for about three months, the experience of me showering my girlfriend-to-be with
gifts on valentines day will be a life changing experience which I’m not looking forward to any time soon.
Of course, you may think of me as a miser — I mean for a guy like me whose first bite of valentines day chocolate was the one I took from my sister’s numerous gifts she received from her so-called admirers — and you may be right to think so.
As an economics student, I know how to make money and how to spend it wisely. The only time I buy expensive gifts is when I’m spoiling myself for a good job done.
I’m not in anyway advising any guy to desist from spoiling his girlfriend with gifts under the disguise of valentines day, since I’m in no position to do so.
Of course, girls love guys who spend on them extravagantly and maybe that explains why I’m still single. No one should find himself cornered in this mess of a day called Valentine. If you’ve forgotten the true meaning of valentines day and have already budgeted for it — then all I can say is kudos and I advice you spend wisely.
As for me, I will be at the Accra mall with a few bottle of drinks as I watch these so-called love birds troop in from every corner to drain the last penny from the poor guy they claim to love.
Until the Ghanaian youth finds the true meaning behind celebrating this honorable day, I will forever regard it as the day I hate the most..
And so the celebration of Valentine’s Day goes on, in varied ways. Many will break the bank buying jewelry and flowers for their beloveds. Others like myself will celebrate in a SAD (that’s Single Awareness Day) way, dining alone and binging on self-gifted chocolates. All-in-all, we all had a taste of the valentines day flavor but in different moods. To the ladies reading this, tell me what was your reaction to last year’s valentine’s present? And please be honest!
I hate Valentines Day in Ghana……And This is Why!
All my life I’ve never really understood the whole fuss about Valentines day. I know for sure that it is a day for most women, especially Ghanaian ladies to fulfill their wish lists they’ve kept for years — and of course we know those who will bear that burden — boyfriends and the boy toys.
